The history of Heritage crittall style doors?

Heritage style doors take inspiration from the iconic industrial steel-look doors originally made famous by the Crittall® brand in the late 19th century. While they replicate the aesthetic—slim black steel frame with a distinctive grid pattern over large glass panels — Rhino Aluminium do not sell Crittall® doors. Instead, we offer doors designed in the style of these originals, crafted with modern materials to suit today’s homes, with that timeless design and that industrial style doors aesthetic.

Unlike traditional steel Crittall® doors, our heritage style doors are made from high-quality aluminium. This material offers the same sleek, architectural look, but with key benefits: it’s lighter, more durable, cost-effective, and virtually maintenance-free.

The industrial steel-look design is popular in various door types—especially external patio systems like sliding and bifold doors—but it’s particularly striking in French doors. With their expansive glass panels and slimline frames, heritage style French doors allow natural light to flood your space and create a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors.

Not only are they practical, but they’re also a bold design statement. The dark aluminium slim profiled frames provide a striking visual contrast, adding character and timeless appeal to both modern and traditional settings.

Secure By Design System

Our Aluminium Heritage Crittall Style Doors have gone through and passed the Official Police Security Initiative referred to by the industry as Secure by Design (SBD). This certification is given to systems which meet and exceed the level of security required by the OPSI (the official UK Police flagship initiative). The purpose of SBD is to ensure that UK homes fitted with products that meet this standard are more secure and reduce the risk of burglary.

Connecting Domestic Customers with local  Heritage Doors Installers

We can connect customers with a local approved installer, providing the best service as well as a huge cost saving. Rhino have a network of installation companies that have already been approved by us, each of these installers have proven they are able to carry out the installation of our products using the methods we insist on. On average this option save the customer around 25% on their installed Rhino Crittall Style Doors.

Embrace the elegance of Heritage Crittall style doors

Completing our ultra slim aluminium range is the new Classic Heritage Crittall Style Doors, featuring a unique, period inspired lockbox design. With our signature ‘stepped’ look consistent across the outside of the door, art deco styling has never looked so good. Available as a single or French door, with slim sightlines Classic Heritage Doors offers the modern levels of thermal performance that Building Regulations demand, all in a product with an aesthetically pleasing timeless look.

Thermlock® technology helps keep you and your home snug and warm

Clean, crisp lines on the outside hide away our innovative Thermlock® multi-chamber thermal design, helping keep you and your property well insulated against the worst of the UK weather. Their insulating chambers act as a thermal break and work in conjunction with high performance glazing to create class leading thermal performance, far superior to traditional polyamide thermal breaks. Sheerline’s cills also feature this same technology coupled with innovative inbuilt
weather sealing that keep draughts and rain safely outside.

Security built into the heart of every product.

The innovative construction method of the Classic system creates exceptionally strong frames, maximising the inherent strength of Rhino’s aluminium windows and doors. This coupled with our high security multipoint locking, helps keep you and your home safe and secure. Additional features like unique hinge protectors also help create outstanding levels of security.

For ultimate security, a beadless option is also available in the Classic window system which eliminates the need for separate glazing beads. Instead, our patented† corner jointing method securely locks the glass away within a completely sealed unit. No window in its class is as secure.

All available in a range of colours and finishes to suit every home

Our Classic range is available in twelve powder coated colours, with the option of choosing a different colour for the interior to help you find the look that is right for your property. Questions About Heritage External French Doors

What are Heritage style doors?

Heritage style doors recreate the iconic industrial steel-look first popularised by the Crittall® brand in the late 19th century. With their slim black frames and grid-like glazing bars, they echo the designs found in early 20th-century commercial and public buildings.

Originally crafted from steel to support large glass panels, these doors were strong but heavy, expensive, and prone to rust. Today, we replicate the look using lightweight, durable, low-maintenance aluminium frames. Aluminium offers the same strength and sleek appearance as steel but is more affordable and easier to handle.

This industrial-inspired design works beautifully for many patio door styles—bifold, sliding, or French double doors. Heritage style French doors, in particular, feature expansive glazing for maximum natural light, slim frames for an airy feel, and a striking dark finish that creates a bold focal point both inside and out.

Why are they called Heritage style doors?

The name comes from their origins in 1880s England, where they were fitted in prestigious buildings such as the Houses of Parliament and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Their industrial elegance and practical design have kept them in demand for over a century.

While the style has evolved, it remains a favourite for art deco, period, and contemporary homes worldwide.

What era do Heritage style doors belong to?

Though first introduced in the 1880s, they became most iconic during the art deco period of the 1920s–30s, when steel and concrete defined modernist architecture.

Today, with double glazing and thermally broken aluminium frames, these French doors combine vintage style with modern efficiency—keeping homes warm while letting in abundant light. Their lightweight build also makes them ideal for easy operation, especially for those who find heavy steel doors difficult to use.

Are steel look patio doors double glazed?

Yes. All of our steel-look aluminium French doors feature low-E toughened double glazing as standard. This ensures excellent energy efficiency—keeping warmth in, reducing heat loss, and maintaining comfort year-round.

Are steel look doors energy efficient?

They can be—and ours are. Older aluminium frames had a reputation for poor insulation, but our thermally broken aluminium frames and low-E double glazing deliver a superior thermal performance of 1.5 W/m²K, exceeding UK Building Regulation standards.

The thermal break—an insulating barrier inside the frame—prevents heat from escaping and cold from entering, giving you the classic look of steel with the comfort of modern technology.

What are the benefits of steel look aluminium doors?

  • Cost-effective – Cheaper to manufacture and purchase than steel.

  • Durable – Aluminium frames can last up to 30 years with minimal maintenance.

  • Low-maintenance – No warping, rotting, or rusting, and no need for regular painting.

  • Stylish – Dark, slim frames stay looking cleaner for longer and are easy to wipe down.

How much do steel look patio doors cost?

Our Rhino Aluminium Heritage range starts at just under £1,650 (including frames, handles, and locks, plus free UK mainland delivery). Prices vary with size and optional extras such as sidelights. While sidelights can raise the cost, these doors can also increase your home’s value thanks to their style and quality.

Are Heritage style doors secure?

Yes. They feature:

  • Multi-point locking systems for maximum security.

  • 4mm toughened safety glass—up to 5× stronger than standard glass.

  • Internally beaded glazing to prevent glass removal from outside.

With robust aluminium frames and modern locking technology, Heritage style doors are every bit as secure—if not more so—than other patio door options.
